Stocks

This year in Language Arts class we read a book called The Westing Game. In the book there was a character named Turtle. Turtle loved to invest in stocks, so we took inspiration from her and decided to pretend to invest $20,000 in the stock market. How this worked was we imagined that we had $20,000 and distributed it to different stocks that we wanted to buy.

We would put the name of these stocks, the price per share, and how much money we were going to invest in that stock. We would repeat this until the $20,000 was spent. We would then check on the stocks that we invested in once every week. In the end, I made -1017.52. Some stocks I invested in were TSLA, AAPL, and SBUX. In conclusion, this was a very fun activity in Language Arts class and is definitely a favorite memory.

TED Like Talk

This year in Language Arts class we have done many interesting activities. One of which was making a TED Like Talk presentation. For this presentation, we had to choose a topic that we loved, do a lot of research on it, and then present it.

My presentation was on the invention of basketball. Basketball is special to me because both my brothers play it and I’ve been playing it since I was 5 years old. Below are some pictures of slides in my TED Like Talk.

The first picture is a question and answer slide and the second picture explains a very important rule in basketball.

Presenting to your whole class can be nerve-wracking, so our teacher provided some of Chris Anderson’s (Curator of TED) tips when presenting a TED Talk. Some of these tips included to rarely use video clips more than thirty seconds, don’t put everything your going to say on a slide and if you are going to add multiple photos to a slide, have a black background.

My Highlight of the Year

Throughout the year in LA (Language Arts) class, we have done lots of interesting things, but one of my favorite tasks that we did in class this year was reading a book called The Last Cuentista. In the book, the main character (Petra), wanted to be a storyteller. Petra was inspired by her abuelita (grandma). There were times when Petra was in doubt if she could ever become a storyteller, but she never stopped believing in her passion, even during the hard times when Petra thought she lost everything, (including her family) she kept telling stories. Petra’s cuenta inspired us to make our own cuenta, one that was very special to us, one that even in difficult times, we would never forget.

What’s your dream world? Mine includes buildings made out of candy, money trees, oceans that are bright pink, and mountains that are gold. Writing about our dream or ideal world was one of the activities we did in LA class this year. It made me really think about values and then they would come to life (in your mind)!

Do you have a special story or cuento? One that’s been passed from family member to family member? I do…. It’s about the immigration of my grandfather from Damascus, Syria to Chicago, Illinois. This story means a lot to me, it shows the dedication of hard work, diligence, and bravery. My grandfather had to go through a series of challenges to get to America. This includes leaving family and spending hours everyday studying. Despite that, my grandfather became a successful surgeon for 40 years and is now enjoying his retired life and his family!

Do you love reading books? If not, do you like making them? That was one of the other awesome activities we did in LA class this year and my favorite. We spent days choosing designs and making imprints for our book. In our books, we featured our ideal world story and our cuento. To make these books, we teamed up with artist Peg Gignoux. This experience was very fun and definitely one of the best memories of the year.

In conclusion, this year in LA class we did more than just read books, we made them. The books varied from a dream world to a story that is special in your family to literally making books. The activities in LA class were very memorable and were definitely a highlight in my year. I hope that 7th grades LA class will be just as memorable!

WAHIDI WORLD

Hello, my name is Sloane and I live on planet Wahidi World. Life is great. I feel bad for anyone who is not living on planet Wahidi World or as I like to call it, “The Perfect World.” It’s not only a kid’s dream, it’s everyone’s. It’s a colorful, peaceful, fun, cool, and amazing planet. Some places are fully edible and loaded with CANDY!!!

Planet Wahidi World is next to planet Earth, the two planets are in a competition. The main objective is the planet that has the greater population. Currently, Earth is winning but only by a few… billion people. All I know is that those people are missing out.

Most of the animals and plants on Wahidi World are the same as Earth, but there is one animal species that we have that Earth doesn’t. It’s called the greem. The greem is really cute, but can be really annoying at night preventing people from sleeping. The greem is half owl and half dog.

Here on Wahidi World, we don’t have regular trees, we have money trees. That’s a dream on Earth, but a reality here. Objects in Planet Wahidi World are made out of all sorts of colors. For example, oceans are bright pink, mountains are gold, and the sky has every color you could ever imagine.

Since Planet Wahidi World has everything anyone could want, everyone is happy, meaning that we have no crime here. Ha, take that Earth! Planet Wahidi World also has no pollution, no climate change, and no global warming.

In conclusion, you should live on Planet Wahidi World because not only is the president Sophia Wahidi amazing, but we have so many plants, animals, and food that Earth doesn’t have!
